My professional and academic interests (Journalism, ePR/Marketing, Research)
Throughout my research period at the University of South Australia (UniSA), I enjoyed the
excellent study conditions for collaborative research with industry, government, and
various organisations at local, multinational, and international levels,
for which UniSA is rightly renowned around the world. Also, the University's support for
student activities, exhausting the full potential of new ICT possibilities, and its
providing of the latest technology in support of research work both are guarantees of success
for a praxis-oriented scientific community in today's globally inter-linked Knowledge
Society.
My study
was carried out as part of the Doctor of Communication (D Com)
programme offered by the School of Communication, whose research and teaching activity also extends to
the areas of journalism, professional writing, multimedia, information and knowledge management, internet
strategies, and public relations. The D Com is a structured research programme which allows
candidates to undertake projects and research appropriate to their professional situation.
It allows graduates working in communication related industries to contribute to the research in their
industry while continuing their professional roles. The D Com programme therefore is applied research,
supporting practitioners and meeting the needs of mid career professionals.
If—as in the practical case of my study—upheavals begin to emerge in the
(media) market and, as a consequence, radical changes are expected or become necessary in the
area of operations of a company, it is exactly this knowledge exchange that can
help check new theoretical management concepts for their practical use in concrete
test cases and with relevance to the necessities of the day. The beneficiaries of this procedure are
the academic institutions who train future junior management people, as well as companies who are ready
to innovate and open minded mid career professionals.

Five remarkable skills |
|
|
• |
|
Analysis and problem-solving abilities: I am up to identifying and structuring (new) problems,
gathering information on them and weighing them before developing suggestions as to their solution.
|
|
|
• |
|
Holistic thinking: I have process planning and development skills.
|
|
|
• |
|
Work independently: I tackle problems without a need for direction;
I have autonomous work expertise.
|
|
|
• |
|
Communication skills: I know how to put stands across intelligibly and argue conclusively.
|
|
|
• |
|
Willingness to learn: I am keen on acquiring new knowledge.
|
|
My experience in the co-ordination of a small team of technical staff
(writers, content organisers and designers) and co-ordination of a network
of external suppliers
Driven by the reinforced application of ICTs, decentralised forms of
work and organisation are spreading increasingly. ICTs support activities that are performed
exclusively or temporarily outside the central company compounds (home based or alternating),
with the customer and independently of location (mobile). Moreover, both the internet and e-publishing have
redefined the understanding of the position and function of all those involved in the publishing process
and management of information. A Content Manager now treats the marketing
of (his) content in a holistic and creative fashion. The marketing effort gets under way with the
generation of an idea for (new) content and leads from flexible production of content through to an integrated
publishing process (print, offline, online) and finally to Customer Relationship Management. |

My demonstrated experience in and the ability to conceive new print solutions as
they relate to the achievement of broad marketing objectives
What applies to both the individuals
and the businesses concerned, irrespective of their special context, is the fact that avoiding the use
or application of new media or internet technology means provoking grave information deficits and competitive
disadvantage. Especially called upon to meet market requirements here are publishing houses, the book trade,
and libraries, all of whom can take these developments into account by adapting step-by-step part or all of
their organisational structures.
Process aims can be arrived at in a lean way when the quality of the collaboration,
information and communication is appropriate to the given organisation and situation.
This is my professional experience. The point of managing publishing processes is to
make available on time to the customer the right product of a quality that is adequate
and for a price that is suitable. Being in charge of a publishing process means being
able to get organised in a network of team colleagues and professionally mastering
quality efficient technology, computer files, e-mail communication, and calendar.
I have always team-worked successfully in the above functions, learned from colleagues'
experience and contributed mine in exchanges with colleagues. |
